Ray Manzarek & the UCLA Trio - Moanin'

Back

Ray was a well established musician before his fateful meeting with Jim and a couple of decent examples of his work surprisingly survived. The earliest is from the Lighthouse Jazz Club(U.C.L.A) Los Angeles, California from March 29th, 1961 and strongly captures his U.C.L.A Trio's musical roots, firmly placed in jazz. The line up consisted of Ray on piano, John Halliberton on bass and Sam Beale on drums both were fellow students at U.C.L.A. The tape is about half an hour long and features Moaning, Sigmund Romberg's Softly (As In The Morning Sunrise), Joey, Ikin Retnin a Ray original & Thelonious Monk's 'Round Midnight which give a good idea of Ray's influences. The set is damn good and its plain that Ray has a good stage prescence when he performs and a confidence that served him well a few years later.....and the guy has always been a decent singer. So what else do we know about this combo? Did they do regular gigs in clubs around the LA area......are there any photos apart from the one on the booklet from Ray's Myth & reality album. Be nice to know a bit more about Ray and his early jazz excursions...... - Info by TheWallsScreamedPoetry from the official Ray Manzarek Forums -
