Shoplifting Seagull

Back

Caught on camera: The shop-raiding seagull with a taste for chilli Doritos The rest of the flock flap around, begging for titbits and diving for scraps. And his tastes, it seems, are rather particular. It has to be tortilla chips. But not just any kind. Only Chilli Heatwave flavour Doritos will do. Luckily for him, they are always in the same place in his favourite corner shop. He makes a daily stop there, hopping from foot to foot until staff happen to open the door. Then he strolls in and helps himself. His daily shopping trips have become something of a tourist attraction at the shop. He is now so popular that customers have started paying for his chips. "Everyone is amazed by the seagull," said shop assistant Sriaram Nagarajan. "For some reason he only takes that one particular kind, nothing else will do for him. "He's got it down to a fine art. He waits until there are no customers around and I'm standing behind the till, then he raids the place." Once outside, the seagull enlists the help of other gulls and pigeons to rip open the packet, which he shares with the group. They all feast and then disappear, before returning the next day. The bird first swooped on the shop, in Aberdeen's Castlegate, two weeks ago. A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said the gull probably developed a taste for the chips by chance. "Perhaps it tried some crisps in a shiny packet in the street and was just opportunistic at the shop when it saw what was inside."
