GIANT CECROPIA MOTHS MATING ON CACOON (07.06.21) 2
BackWild Cecropia moths. One emerged on the first day of summer. One moth had just emerged from its cocoon (shown) and was still hanging on it (07.06.21), when another came in to mate. Cecropia moths are very rare here, so that it is amazing that another one found it. The male has a bushier antenna with a yellow tip. The female appears larger and has a much larger thicker abdomen. They are the largest North American moth and can have a wingspan of 6 inches. They belong to the family Saturniidae and can be referred to as silkworm moths. The female emits a pheromone that a male can smell (with his antenna) a mile or more away. The mated pair will stay together for a day or so.
